There are currently 146 vacancies on the federal judiciary. Additionally, there are 30 more vacancies coming that have already been announced. There are 62 nominations pending to fill these vacancies.
Last week, President Trump announced his 11th wave of federal judicial nominees. The nine new candidates were nominated to district courts in Minnesota, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Iowa, as well as to the Fifth, Seventh, and Ninth Circuit Courts of Appeals. If they are confirmed by the Senate, these judges will hold their seats for life unless they are impeached.
So far, the Senate has confirmed 24 judges nominated by President Trump. The most notable was Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch. Based upon normal life expectancy, an earlier Number of the Day found that Gorsuch could serve on the Court for 32.6 years.
