Spirit Airlines Bans 'Lewd or Offensive' Clothing, Tattoos

By    |   Friday, 24 January 2025 06:58 PM EST

Spirit Airlines revised its dress code this week, saying passengers can be denied boarding or removed from flights due to lewd clothing or offensive tattoos.

The budget airline updated its Conduct of Carriage on Wednesday, specifying that passengers may be kicked off flights if they were "inadequately clothed" or "whose clothing or article, including body art, is lewd, obscene, or offensive in nature."

Spirit said "inadequately clothed" will include "see-through clothing; not adequately covered; exposed breasts, buttocks, or other private parts," adding that a passenger could be denied boarding a plane if he or she has "an offensive odor unless caused by a qualified disability."

Spirit has developed an unfortunate reputation over the years, ranking at the bottom of a 2023-24 American Customer Satisfaction Index Travel Study that surveyed passenger sentiment of nine U.S.-based airlines.

The tongue-in cheek account @humansofspiritairlines on Instagram has documented some of the more colorful clothing violations passengers have worn on Spirit flights, ranging from bathing suits to bare feet, complete with fight videos.

Passengers' clothes, or lack thereof, have made news in recent months, with some travelers being removed from flights for exposing too much skin. In October, Tara Kehidi and a friend were booted from a flight from Los Angeles to New Orleans for wearing crop tops.

"We were wearing crop tops ... just like a little bit of stomach showing," Kehidi told KABC, adding that a flight attendant allegedly told them to "put something on."

In November, the airline filed for bankruptcy protection following a long run of quarterly losses, failed merger attempts, and looming debt maturities. Spirit diclosed in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing on Jan. 16 that it secured up to $300 million post-bankruptcy financing from its existing debtholders in its effort to emerge stronger from Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.
