Could an 11th-grader be the mastermind in Aaron Rajman's murder? Police seem to think so, after 16-year-old Summer Church and two men were charged with first-degree murder in the death of the professional mixed martial arts fighter who was shot at his Boca Raton home on July 3.
Police initially confirmed that Roberto Ortiz and Jace Swinton, both 18, had been arrested on Friday, along with "a juvenile" later revealed to be Summer Church, who faces charges as an adult.
The Olympic Heights High School 11th-grader was nabbed by authorities while being driven to school by her mother, Judith Church, the Palm Beach Post reported.
It later emerged that Summer Church had become acquainted with Rajman after they met in a convenience store in January. Swinton, who was dating Summer Church at the time, had met Rajman and reportedly visited the MMA fighter's house, the Post said.
Judith Church told the Palm Beach Post that, on the night of the murder, her daughter had been forced at gunpoint to contact Rajman and establish whether he was home or not.
Her mother said that Ortiz and three other unidentified gunmen then forced Summer Church and a friend into a car but released them before reaching Rajman's house.
She insisted her daughter did not partake in the shooting, adding that Summer Church had been co-operating with detectives.
"She worked with them and gave them as much information as possible," Judith Church told the Post. "She wasn't there. To charge her with first-degree murder doesn't make sense."
The trio appeared before a judge in Palm Beach County, where they were denied bond on Saturday.
CBS 12 noted that the three defendants were charged with first-degree murder as well as two counts of armed home invasion robbery with a firearm.
