A missing 2-year-old was found dead in a wooded area two miles away from her home near Pittsburgh over the weekend just an hour and a half after she was last seen.
Adrionna Williams’ family reported the toddler missing around 7 p.m. Sunday and said they had last seen her around
6:30 p.m. before she wandered off, according to CBS Pittsburgh. A woman walking her dog stumbled across the child's body less than two hours later and alerted police.
Officials do not believe the 2-year-old was killed in the ravine where she was found.
"We do not believe the child walked there from her Wilkinsburg home. It’s too far," Lieutenant Andrew Schurman of the Alleghany Police Department told CBS Pittsburgh. "We believe the child was placed there after her death."
“We're as curious as everybody else to try to get it solved,” Chief Greg Geppert of the
Swissvale Police Department told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “It's very upsetting to us.”
The case is being treated as a homicide although the girl’s body contained no obvious signs of trauma or injuries, except for a "brush burn" on her face, according to the Post-Gazette. At this point, officials also do not believe Williams was abducted. An autopsy was conducted on Monday, though tests have continued throughout the week.
After the remains were found, Swissvale police closed the road adjacent to the forest and set up a tent over the crime scene to protect potential evidence from Sunday night’s heavy rains in the Pittsburgh area. Allegheny County Police are conducting an ongoing investigation with their homicide unit and interviewing family and other individuals that may have been close to the victim.
“That’s the crux of the investigation: Where the child was, who was in care of the child, the child’s family and friends,” Schurman told CBS Pittsburgh.
Police have yet to name any suspects in the case involving the girl who would have turned 3 years old next month. The media have been unable to reach her family.
