Aaron Carter publicly came out as bisexual, with the popular 29-year-old singer posting about his sexuality on Twitter late Saturday. Shortly after, news surfaced of his breakup with photographer Madison Parker, HuffPost reported.
All that comes less than a month after authorities said, per The Associated Press, that Carter and Parker were arrested July 15 on DUI and drug charges in Georgia.
Carter, younger brother of Nick Carter of Backstreet Boys, was accused of drunken driving and possession of less than 1 ounce of marijuana and paraphernalia. Parker was arrested for obstruction, possession of less than 1 ounce of pot and paraphernalia.
Carter had been scheduled to perform in Kansas City, Missouri, on Saturday night. A tweet from his account hours before the show said he wouldn't make it because of "transportation issues."
“Aaron and Madison love each other and respect one another dearly,” Carter's rep said in a statement about their breakup. “It was a mutual decision and Aaron’s personal statement released speaks for itself. Now back to the music.”
Carter's latenight tweet started off by expressing his love and appreciation for his fans, who have supported him since the release of his 2000 hit song "I Want Candy," Time magazine said.
"There's something I'd like to say that I feel is important for myself and my identity that has been weighing on my chest for nearly half of my life."
"This doesn't bring me shame, just a weight and burden I have held onto for a long time that I would like lifted off me."
Carter said he was 13 when he first realized he was attracted to both boys and girls.
"I grew up in this entertainment industry at a very young age, and when I was around 13 years old, I started to find boys and girls attractive," he wrote. "There were years that went by that I thought about, but it wasn’t until I was 17 years old, after a few relationships with girls, I had an experience with a male that I had an attraction to who I also worked with and grew up with."
Carter credited his music for being the "safe haven" he's needed for most of his life.
"Music will ALWAYS be what transcends all of us and myself. The studio has always been my safe haven," he wrote.
Carter's tweet received a ton of support, having garnered more than 1,000 retweets within 12 hours of posting.
