Aaron Hernandez Charged With First-Degree Murder in Double Slaying

By    |   Thursday, 15 May 2014 02:42 PM EDT

Aaron Hernandez has been charged with murder in connection with the shooting death of two men in July 2012. The announcement was made by Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley on Thursday.

Hernandez is already accused of murder in the execution-style killing of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd, whose bullet-riddled body was found last June in an industrial area near Hernandez's home in North Attleborough, Massachusetts. Hernandez, a former tight end with the New England Patriots, was cut by the team within hours of his arrest.

In relation to the latest murder charges, the victims were Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, who were shot to death as they sat in a car in Boston's South End on July 16, 2012.

According to Conley, Hernandez "ambushed and executed [the victims] as they drove home," after he had met the victims at a nightclub, The Associated Press reported.

"Unbeknownst to them, Hernandez followed them traveling in an SUV. When the victims' car stopped at a red light ... the SUV pulled up beside the victims' car on the right," Conley told reporters at Thursday news conference. "Aaron Hernandez then fired a .38-caliber revolver multiple times from the driver's side of his vehicle into the passenger side of the victims' vehicle."

According to relatives and friends of the victims who witnessed the shooting, neither Abreu nor Furtado knew Hernandez before they encountered each other that night.

"They just came up and started firing for no reason at all," an alleged eyewitness told prosecutors in 2013, Yahoo News reported. "We never had any trouble. We were not those kind of people. We were just having fun. … Things happened so fast. I was trying to defend myself. They were shooting everywhere inside the car, front to back. They just came to kill. That's it."

Abreu died from a bullet wound to the chest and Furtado died from one to the head, Reuters reported. Three other people in the car with them survived, the district attorney said.

The vehicle used in the shooting was subsequently found at Hernandez's uncle's home in Bristol, Conn., WHDH-TV reported.

At the time of his arrest, the 24-year-old Hernandez was a rising star in the NFL, having signed a multi-year contract with the Patriots worth about $40 million.
