After firing tight end Aaron Hernandez, who was charged with murder last week, the New England Patriots offered fans who owned football jerseys with Hernandez’s #81 printed on them a chance to exchange them for different shirts at its pro shop at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass.

But owners could make more money on the Hernandez jerseys by selling them on eBay: Prices have now reached upwards of $250, USA Today Sports reports.

Hernandez is charged with murder in the June 17 shooting deat of Odin Lloyd. Two other men may have been involved in the killing, prosecutors said. The murder may be linked to an earlier dispute in a Boston bar.

EBay told ABC News that selling the shirts does not violate its policy, but said, “if Hernandez is convicted, we will evaluate items as appropriate under the section of our Offensive Materials policy."

The eBay sales were a hot and controversial topic on Twitter.

Sports memorabilia collectors may be buying the jerseys as an investment, USA Today Sports speculated.
