The winner of "America's Got Talent" Season 12 was announced Wednesday night: 12-year-old ventriloquist Darci Lynne Farmer.
Fox, the network that airs the show, said 52 million votes were cast in the competition, a record for "America's Got Talent."
Farmer walked away with the $1 million prize, edging out 10-year-old singing prodigy Angelica Hale.
Farmer burst into tears after being announced the winner. In addition to the money, she'll get to headline her own show in Las Vegas.
"It's really unpredictable because it's in America's hands … and you never know: America could love you or could not like you at all," Farmer, from Oklahoma City, told The Oklahoman over the summer about being involved in the competition. "Winning would be amazing."
According to The Oklahoman, Farmer started ventriloquism two and a half years ago to combat her shyness. On the May 30 season premiere, she and her rabbit diva puppet Petunia performed a rendition of "Summertime," where judge Mel B. hit the Golden Buzzer, allowing her to advance straight to the live shows.
"She got to 100 million (views) within 24 hours on Facebook," Misty Farmer, her mother, told The Oklahoman about the May 30 performance that went viral on social media. "They said she's been the most-watched audition in the history of 'AGT." They've never seen anything like it. It's been crazy."
Farmer introduced a new puppet on the Aug. 15 quarterfinals, an awkward mouse named Oscar, and performed the Jackson 5's "Who's Lovin' You."
Hale was a fan favorite after overcoming a serious illness. She shared her joy on Instagram.
