Al Roker Overslept for 'Wake Up With Al' Weather Channel Show

Al Roker Overslept for 'Wake Up With Al' Weather Channel Show

By    |   Tuesday, 06 August 2013 01:08 PM EDT

Al Roker was absent from Tuesday's "Wake Up with Al," show at 6 a.m. on The Weather Channel because, well, he overslept.

Roker, though, managed to wake up in time to make it to his regular gig on the "Today" show at 7 a.m. Teased by his co-workers with the taunts of "Rip Van Roker," the longtime "Today" weatherman made fun of himself on Twitter.

"After 39 years, it happened. I overslept and missed a show. Missed #WUWA. But will be on time for @today," Roker tweeted at 5:41 a.m., reported the New York Daily News.

Even Today.com's Matt Murray had a little fun at Roker's expense, posting a story about Roker's tardiness while squealing on another NBC on-air personality who had a hard time leaving the comforts of his bed on Monday.

"Al isn't the only TODAY anchor to oversleep this week, as Willie Geist slept through his alarm on Monday morning, missing the opening segment of his (MSNBC) morning show "Morning Joe," Murray said in a Today.com story posted Tuesday. "Willie said it was the first time he's overslept in his seven years on the job. But Al and Willie aren't the only ones who know the panic that comes with oversleeping. From missing practice, to the first day of school, it can happen to the best of us."

"Today" show cohost Savannah Guthrie could not resist pouring salt in the wound by tweeting out: "Whoa. You know those people you can set your watch to? The always on time people? @alroker *used* to be one of them #oversleeping," according to Today.com.

The Weather Channel's Stephanie Abrams cohosts "Walk Up with Al."  Roker has been doing double duty between that show and "Today," since 2009, according to The Weather Channel.

"Wake Up with Al" is replayed at 10 a.m. eastern time for West Coast viewers. The show is produced live from both New York City and Atlanta, according to NBC Universal.  Roker and Abrams both appear in the studio, interacting with guests and viewers, and in the field, reporting on the most compelling weather stories of the day.
