Alamo Drafthouse: 'Team America' to Replace 'The Interview'

By    |   Thursday, 18 December 2014 07:06 AM EST

"Team America: World Police," a farcical 2004 comedy about North Korea by the creators of "South Park," will be shown at the Dallas/Fort Worth location of the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in place of Sony's hack-canceled "The Interview."

"The Interview" is a comedy depicting American talk show hosts recruited to assassinate North Korea leader Kim Jung-Un. In "Team America," creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone depict Kim-Jung Un's father Kim Jung Il as the antagonist who is eventually killed in a comedy done with puppets.

"We're just trying to make the best of an unfortunate situation," James Wallace, creative manager and programmer at the cinema's Dallas/Fort Worth location, told The Hollywood Reporter.

A statement on the Alamo Drafthouse website promoted the "Team America" showing as a way of a protest.

"The world is different in 2014 than it was in 2004," said the Alamo Drafthouse. "Kim Jong Il is gone. I don't know if Michael Moore is still around or not. But a lot of the brilliance in 'Team America' … That is how true American heroes will be celebrating this year, but if you want to let the terrorists win...well, that's your prerogative."

The Huffington Post reported that North Korea did not react to "Team America" when it was released in 2004.

"Team America: World Police" made $32 million domestically and another $18 million in foreign markets after it was released in 2004, according to Box Office Mojo.

Sony dropped plans to release "The Interview," starring Seth Rogen and James Franco after hackers threatened theaters showing the movie, reported Deadline.com.

"We are deeply saddened at this brazen effort to suppress the distribution of a movie, and in the process do damage to our company, our employees, and the American public," Sony said in a statement. "We stand by our filmmakers and their right to free expression and are extremely disappointed by this outcome."
