"Alan continued to write and perform until his last days," read a statement from 1st Phase Records, O'Day's record label. "Alan was a generous man who gave his heart and soul to the music industry."
Award-winning songwriter Diane Warren, a close friend of O'Day's, remembered the artist.
"My dear friend and mentor Alan O'Day has passed away. 'If you believe in forever, then life is just a one night stand. If there's a rock and roll Heaven, well you know they've got one hell of a band,'" Warren said, quoting O'Day's song "Rock And Roll Heaven," to The Hollywood Reporter.
"
Well the band just got better. Rest in Peace my friend," Warren added.
Born in Hollywood, O'Day grew up in the Coachella Valley area and later lived in Nashville and Los Angeles, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
O'Day was well known for his 1977 hit "Undercover Angel," which was used in several movies and television series, including "Super 8" in 2011 and "Charlie's Angels" in 2000.
In 1971, O'Day signed with Warner Bros., where he wrote the hits "Train of Thought" for Cher, "Rock and Roll Heaven" for the Righteous Brothers, and "Angel Baby" by Helen Reddy, which shot to number 1 on the charts in 1974.
In addition to songwriting for A-List artists, O'Day also sang alongside chart toppers like Johnny Mathis, Paul Anka, Tom Jones, Tony Orlando, Three Dog Night, and the 5th Dimension.
Aside from his rock and roll songs, O'Day co-wrote nearly 100 songs with Janis Liebhart for the long-running CBS animated series "The Muppet Babies," the Los Angeles Times reported.
O'Day is survived by his wife, Yuka.
