Aldi has recalled apples in a limited number of stories in six states over a listeria scare.

The grocery chain noted that an assortment of Jack Brown Produce apples that were on sale as of Dec. 13, were recalled as a cautionary measure due to possible listeria contamination.

Aldi said in a statement that the products had been sold at stores located in Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, South Carolina, North Carolina and parts of Atlanta via the company's Instacart delivery system.

The recall includes the following products:

  • Fuji Apples, 3 lb. bag, UPC code: 033383087139
  • Gala Apples, 3 lb. bag, UPC code: 033383086897
  • Golden Apples, 3 lb. bag, UPC code: 033383081175
  • Honeycrisp Apples, 2 lb. bag, UPC code: 079954000015
  • Honeycrisp Apples, unpackaged, PLU sticker: 3283

The Food and Drug Administration described listeria as "an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems."

Listeria infection can cause high fevers, stiffness, severe headache, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea and although symptoms can be short-lived, it can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

The apples were found to be contaminated during a routine sampling program, the FDA noted, adding that "consumers who have purchased Gala, Fuji, Honeycrisp and Golden Delicious Apples under the brand name "Apple Ridge" on or after December 11, 2017 are urged to destroy the product and contact Jack Brown Produce, Inc. for a full refund."

Aldi said no illnesses related to these products have been reported and no other Aldi products were affected by the recall.

"Aldi takes the safety and integrity of the products it sells seriously," the company, adding that it "sincerely regrets any inconvenience and concern this voluntary recall may cause."

Jack Brown Produce said it would no longer distribute products processed at Nyblad Orchards "as the FDA and the company continue their investigation into what caused the problem," The Detroit News reported.
