ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Goes Viral, Spurs Donations to Fight Disease

The ice bucket challenge, raising dollars to find a cure for ALS, has gone viral and it made its way to the White House this week when the Kennedy family challenged the Obamas to a cold one.

The ice bucket challenge, which is exactly what the name implies — a bucket of ice-cold water dumped over your head — has increased donations to fight ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, by 1,000 percent, ALS Association National President Barbara Newhouse told The Associated Press. Donations were up to about $160,000 compared to $14,480 for the same 10-day time period last year.

The popular ice bucket challenges are spreading through Hollywood, the music world, and all around the country, with numerous groups dumping the icy water on their heads and posting photos and video online.



And finally, this week, as Ethel Kennedy was nominated by her family to take the ice bucket challenge, the popular fundraising technique moved into the White House.

Maxwell Kennedy, son of Robert F. and Ethel Kennedy, nominated his entire family to take the challenge, and as his mother, Ethel Kennedy, raised the bucket over her head to participate, she said, “Welcome to Cape Cod, President Obama. I nominate you.”

And the fun isn’t over yet. The ice bucket challenge continues to pop up online, with more and more people receiving nominations.
