Amanda Bynes Overcomes Mental Crisis, Thrives at Fashion School

Amanda Bynes has rebounded from her near-mental breakdown a year ago and completed her first quarter at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising this week.

The 27-year-old former Nickelodeon star began classes at the Orange County fashion school in January and reportedly plans to register for more courses next month.

"She's a great student who always participated and really cared about her classes," a source told E! Online Wednesday. "She really fit in and loves her school . . . If she was offered an acting job anytime soon, she may not take it because she's so focused on school."

Bynes also made her return to Twitter earlier this month after a lengthy absence while she sought help for mental illness.

Bynes' downward spiral came to a head over the summer when she was placed on a 5150 hold in July after setting a small fire in the driveway of a Los Angeles-area home. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and eventually moved to a fancy Malibu rehab center in September. She was released in December and has reportedly been staying at her parents' California home and attending outpatient treatment.

Last month, Bynes squared up her longstanding legal issues when she struck a plea deal to resolve a 2012 DUI case. She was sentenced to three years of probation.
