Amanda Knox told the “Today Show” that “everything is at stake” as she goes on trial once again for the murder of her roommate, and defended her choice not to attend the retrial in Italy.
“I was already imprisoned as an innocent person in Italy, and I can't reconcile the choice to go back with that experience,”
Knox told host Matt Lauer. “I just can’t relive that. I don’t think I’m going to be put back in prison. I think that we’re going to win. That’s why I’m fighting this fight. That’s why I continue to put forth a defensive argument in court.”

Knox was found guilty in 2009 of killing her roommate Meredith Kercher, serving four years in an Italian prison before the conviction was overturned. And now the Italian courts will re-try both Knox and her boyfriend at the time, Raffaele Sollecito, who also was found guilty and then had the conviction overturned. She has written a book, “Waiting to Be Heard,” about the experience.
“I imagine it all the time because I have to think the worst-case scenario,” she said when Lauer asked her if she worried about being found guilty and returning to prison. “I have to prepare in my mind what that would be like. I thought about what it would be like to live my entire life in prison and to lose everything, to lose what I've been able to come back to and rebuild. I think about it all the time. It's so scary. Everything's at stake.”
Knox and Sollecito were spotted in New York City in June, apparently friendly, as they face the new trials.
Sollecito recently told Britain’s Mirror that he was approached numerous times while imprisoned about changing the evidence he had given in the case to implicate Knox.
“They meant if I said I was sleeping or don’t remember things, I would allow the prosecution to catch Amanda,” Sollecito told the Mirror. “They said if I did, I’d be released immediately. They did not persuade me. It was the most sneaky situation. I couldn’t invent anything.”
