Amazon Prime members will soon get special discounts at Whole Foods as Amazon’s acquisition of the healthy food retailer happens Monday.
The two companies plan to lower prices of many items carried at Whole Foods beginning as soon as Monday, and will then begin to offer even more discounts for Prime members as the companies integrate, Business Insider reported.
“Amazon and Whole Foods Market technology teams will begin to integrate Amazon Prime into the Whole Foods Market point-of-sale system, and when this work is complete, Prime members will receive special savings and in-store benefits,” the companies said in a news release.
Amazon believes that merchandising and logistics will enable them to lower prices, the release said.
“Everybody should be able to eat Whole Foods Market quality — we will lower prices without compromising Whole Foods Market’s long-held commitment to the highest standards,” Amazon Worldwide Consumer CEO Jeff Wilke said.
Organic bananas, organic eggs, ground beef, and salmon will be some of the products that see lower prices.
“We can’t wait to start showing customers what’s possible when Whole Foods Market and Amazon innovate together,” Whole Foods co-founder and CEO John Mackey said.
In addition to lowering prices, some Whole Foods products will be available through Amazon.com, AmazonFresh, Prime Pantry, and Prime Now, according to the release. Customers also will be able to pick up products ordered on Amazon and return products to Amazon via some Whole Foods stores.
Both Amazon and Whole Foods will continue to operate under their respective names and don’t plan to change them, the release said.
Twitter users were suitably impressed with lower prices but wondered if quality or quantity would decrease with the price.
