Actress Amber Heard pleaded guilty to providing a false immigration document in her “war on terrier” dog-smuggling case on Monday and released a video apology along with husband Johnny Depp that has gone viral.
Heard avoided jail time with her plea,
The Associated Press reported. Prosecutors dropped more serious charges of illegal importation that could have led to 10 years in prison.
Heard was sentenced to a one-month good behavior bond with a possible fine of $1,000 if she breaks the bond, according to the
BBC.
The case came after the couple brought their Yorkshire terriers, Pistol and Boo, to Australia last year. Australia's then-agriculture minister Barnaby Joyce ordered the dogs out of the country and threatened euthanasia.
In a video apology played in court, Heart and Depp acknowledged the need to protect Australia’s environment from pests and diseases.
“Australians are just as unique – both warm and direct,” Depp said. “When you disrespect Australian law, they will tell you firmly.”
“I am truly sorry that Pistol and Boo were not declared. Protecting Australia is important,” Heard said.
Fox News called the solemn video bizarre and noted that it sparked a flood of online memes and jokes.
One edited version of the video depicts a woman holding a gun while the actors read their statement from cue cards.
