Comedian Amy Schumer talked about gun control while promoting her new film, "Trainwreck," over the weekend, saying she believes that "money" has helped maintain the political status quo.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Schumer was promoting her new film at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland on Saturday when a journalist asked her about her recent campaign with her cousin, Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York, calling for background checks and other gun control measures.
"You know it’s really not my area of expertise but it really upset me," she told the journalist, referring to the late-July theater shooting in Lafayette, Louisiana, that took place during a "Trainwreck" screening. "I just felt the need to get involved because of how personal that event felt and how upset it made me feel."
"It felt really personal to me. In terms of what’s going on in our Congress and why this has been such an ongoing issue is very frustrating," she added.
The journalist asked why she thought the U.S. hadn't passed more gun control measures, to which she responded, "I think it’s money."
Breitbart.com noted that Schumer did not get into details about her stance on gun rights.
"Schumer did not mention that the July 23 shooting took place in a theater with a total gun ban — 100-percent gun control — nor did she mention that [alleged shooter] Houser passed a background check to get his gun," the site reported.
According to Rolling Stone magazine, "59-year-old 'drifter' John Russell Houser was able to legally purchase the gun used in the shooting at an Alabama pawnshop, even though Houser's history of mental problems should have prevented him from acquiring a weapon."
