A new Republican Governor's Association TV ad has slammed Andrew Gillum for his proposed $1 billion corporate tax hike, which would bring Florida’s economic growth “to a sudden stop.”
Gillum, the Democrat running against Republican Ron DeSantis for governor of Florida, has faced criticism from Republicans for his proposal to raise the corporate tax to fund education and increase teachers’ salaries, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
DeSantis has proposed to reduce the same tax and phase out the business rent tax.
On Thursday he criticized Gillum's proposal, stating that the tax increase would be “devastating for jobs and our economic momentum,” according to the Tampa Bay Times. “I will not do that, I will continue to have low-tax policies and recruit and maintain more businesses,” he said.
The RGA also tackled Gillum’s proposed tax hike in its latest ad, comparing it to a car wreck that would shake the state’s economy.
“Florida's economy is running at full speed,” the ad says, according to Tampa Bay Times. “ . . . 37 percent growth since 2010. But Andrew Gillum's ideas would bring it to a sudden stop.”
RGA communications director Jon Thompson weighed in on the matter, noting that Gillum’s “radical far-left policies are too extreme for Florida’s working families,” according to Florida Politics. “Gillum supports a complete government takeover of healthcare, a billion dollar tax hike, and wants to close down our immigration enforcement agency. Andrew Gillum is too radical for Florida.”
An RGA spokesperson confirmed this is the third ad in the association’s campaign, and it is running statewide on broadcast and cable.
