A “very angry” badger found its way into the popular Cellar Tunnel of Scotland’s Craignethan Castle last week and forced parts of the structure to close.

“If you’re heading to #CraignethanCastle over the next few days you might find the Cellar Tunnel closed due to the presence of a very angry badger,” Historic Scotland tweeted.

Staff tried to lure the animal out of the tunnel with cat food and honey, and a scan on Saturday seemed to show that the badger had gone from the premises, ABC Australia reported.

It is believed the badger came from the wooded area around the castle and entered the castle because it was lost, The Independent reported. The animal reportedly dug up through loose soil into the tunnel’s stonework.

Badgers are protected animals in the United Kingdom and cannot be killed willfully.

The rest of the historic castle remained open.

Craignethan Castle was used as a shelter and base for battle during the Battle of Langside in 1568 and the Marian civil war of 1568-73.

Twitter users marveled that the castle could withstand the siege of battle but succumbed to a single badger.
