Stephen Ira Beatty, the 21-year-old transgender son of actors Annette Bening and Warren Beatty, is calling on New York lawmakers in a TV spot to overturn a controversial Medicaid regulation that prohibits the transgender community from receiving healthcare.
Speaking in a new public service announcement produced by GLAAD, Beatty explains how transgender people aren't getting the coverage they need.

"I grew up outside of New York, but I've always known I've wanted to move here for the city's vibrant artistic community," he says. "As a trans person, I would hope that I'd be welcomed but many trans people aren't because we don't have the basic healthcare coverage we need to survive."
Others in the two-minute clip campaign for more access to hormone therapy, a necessary treatment for trans people.
"Trans medicine is a medically necessary intervention," Ronica Mukerjee, a family nurse practitioner, says. "Many people believe that providing hormones for trans patients is cosmetic but as a medical provider I can tell you how crucial it is for trans people to have knowledgeable trans-friendly providers."
The video is the transgender community's attempt to reach New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York State Health Commissioner Nirav Shah and convince them to overturn the Medicaid regulation that excludes them.
Beatty, the oldest of Bening and Warren Beatty's four children, was born Kathlyn Elizabeth and came out as transgender at 14. In a July 2012 promotional video on WeHappyTrans.com, he said he identifies himself as "a trans-man, a f—g queen, a homosexual, a queer, a nerd, fighter, writer, an artist and a guy who needs a haircut."
He is currently a junior at Sarah Lawrence College in New York.
Beatty's famous parents have not commented publicly on their son's sexuality, gender identity, or political affiliations.
