Anthony Geary, who plays Luke Spencer on “General Hospital," gave his final performance on Monday, marking the end of the actor’s nearly four-decade run on the longest-running American soap opera in history.

Geary, 68, has won eight Emmy awards for his portrayal of Spencer, and his character’s 1981 wedding to Laura Webber, played by Genie Francis, drew 30 million viewers and set a record for the most-watched moment in daytime television history, according to ABC News.

Geary’s character was originally supposed to be killed off after a few episodes, but because of fans’ positive reactions to Geary’s portrayal, Luke Spencer appeared on-and-off the show from 1978 until now, according to Us Weekly.

As Geary exits “General Hospital” for good, the actor plans to move to Amsterdam and pursue some long-held dreams, including improving his proficiency in the Dutch language and acting in a foreign film.

“[I'll] spend the summer on my boat and my bicycle and go back into my languages classes. I’ve been writing, so I’m going to concentrate on a book,” Geary told ABC News. “I would like to experience what it’s like to play an American in a Hungarian movie, or play a Hungarian in a Dutch movie. I think that would be a fascinating experience.”

On his final episode, Geary reunited with Francis, as well as Jonathan Jackson — who played Luke and Laura’s son, Lucky — on the show.

“Tony's friendship and guidance has meant the world to me,” Jackson said, the Los Angeles Times reported. “He was always extremely warm and very present, there was nothing condescending in him. He never treated me like a kid. We clicked right away.”

Co-star Jane Elliot, who played love-interest Tracy Quartermaine on the show, also praised Geary for his dedication throughout the decades.

“Tony never phoned a performance in,” Elliot said, according to the Los Angeles Times. “He never gave less than a full commitment, and that set the tone for everyone who worked with him.”
