Arizona Walmart Brawl Leaves 1 Suspect Dead, 1 Officer Wounded

By    |   Monday, 23 March 2015 11:20 AM EDT

An Arizona Walmart brawl between a family of nine and eight police officers left one suspect dead, one injured, one officer wounded by gunfire, and seven in custody over the weekend.

According to NBC News, eight Cottonwood Police Department officers responded to a call at just before midnight on Saturday that said a group of people had assaulted a female Walmart employee.

When officers arrived to the store parking lot, the suspects attacked the officers as well as a second employee who was trying to help.

The brawl culminated with a struggle for one of the officer's weapons, and three gunshots were fired.

"One of the CPD officers received a gun shot wound to his leg. One of the suspects was shot and killed. A second suspect was shot in the abdomen," the department wrote on its website after the altercation.

The wounded officer is said to be a 31-year-old nearly decade-long veteran of the force who is expected to make a full recovery.

The seven suspects taken into custody included five adult males, one adult female, and one female juvenile.

DPS spokesman Bart Graves said the suspects refused to give their names, and so far have been booked as John and Jane Does on suspicion of aggravated assault, attempted homicide, and obstruction of justice.

Some reports suggested the family had been staying in a Chevy Suburban in the parking lot for at least four days. The altercation began in one of the store's bathrooms when an employee tried to find out why they were gathered there.
