A-Rod Suspension Expected To Be Announced on Monday by MLB

Major League Baseball is expected to announce the lengthy suspension of New York Yankee Alex "A-Rod" Rodriguez on Monday for his involvement in the Biogenesis performance-enhancing drugs scandal that rocked the sport this season.

But sources say Yankees manager Joe Girardi could choose to play A-Rod in the meantime as the 38-year-old slugger works on an appeal, according to CNN. Usually, suspensions related to drug offenses are made under the players' collective bargaining agreement, allowing suspended players to keep playing while their cases are being appealed.

Rodriguez has missed the entire 2013 season so far after undergoing hip surgery, but told reporters Saturday he plans to rejoin his teammates for Monday night's game in Chicago against the White Sox.

"If he's in there, I'm going to play him," Girardi told reporters Sunday night.

Some experts, however, say that may not be the case in this instance.

"We're expecting him to be suspended under the commissioner's powers, which means that he would not be able to play while he's doing an appeal, which is why the court system might get involved," CNN legal analyst Rachel Nichols said.

Insiders anticipate a suspension of at least 214 games, which would wipe out A-Rod's entire 2014 season.

A-Rod's suspension is punishment for his links to Biogenesis, an anti-aging clinic in south Florida that reportedly supplied the All-Star with HGH. He has denied all allegations, but admitted in 2009 to have taken performance-enhancing drugs from 2001 to 2003.

The Biogenesis scandal has already ended National League MVP and Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun's season. Braun was suspended without pay last month for violating the MLB drug policy.

Sources expect the MLB to announce the terms of A-Rod's suspension at noon Monday.

Rodriguez currently holds the largest contract ever in American sports, signing with the New York Yankees in 2007 for $275 million over 10 years.
