Australia Heat Wave: Baking Down Under While US Suffers Polar Vortex

By    |   Monday, 06 January 2014 06:19 PM EST

Western Australia is having a heat wave while much of the United States is trying to stay warm in brutally cold temperatures.

Areas around Perth are seeing temperatures climbing through the 90s to hit 100 degrees Fahrenheit, unusual for December, AccuWeather said.

The heat in Queensland, which hit around 109 degrees over the weekend, was responsible for killing thousands of bats, The Guardian reported.

Australian Murray Paas told the Guardian’s Australian paper that he found about 1,000 bats dead on his property.

Paas told the Guardian that he had contacted authorities about removing the bats, but no one has done anything yet although they wanted him not to touch the carcasses because disease could be spread.

Last week, a Guardian story confirmed that Australia had its hottest year on record in 2013. The country’s Bureau of Meteorology connected Australia’s climbing temperatures to carbon emissions.

“We have had warm excursions before but if you look at the warm and cool anomalies, we’re now on a higher trend with higher benchmarks,” Dr. David Jones, of the bureau, told the Guardian. “We are now seeing temperatures unprecedented in our records. It was the warmest-ever year last year by some degree.”

Boeing is taking advantage of the hot temperatures to do hot-weather testing on its new Boeing 747-9 Dreamliner aircraft, Radio New Zealand News said.

The plane will be tested at the Alice Springs airport and will continue until the plane is tested in temperatures above 38 degrees Celsius, or about 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
