Firefighters in eastern China rescued an abandoned baby boy who was lodged in a sewage pipe Saturday after the mother apparently tried to flush the infant down the toilet.
Residents of an apartment building in Jinhua, in the eastern province of Zhejiang, reported hearing crying coming from a pipe on the fourth floor. Rescuers had to cut away a whole section of the four-inch-wide pipe before doctors could extract the two-day old baby, who somehow miraculously survived. The baby is in stable condition at a local hospital.
No one has yet come forward to claim the child, and police are actively looking for the parents, state-run media outlets reported Monday.

"Fortunately the baby survived. But the person [who abandoned him] is still suspected of attempted murder," an unidentified police officer told the state media on Hangzhou.com.cn.
Jinhua police issued an appeal over the weekend on the China's Twitter-like social media website Weibo.
"Mom, come back! The baby is resilient and alive. Please show up, Mom. This is your own baby and he should return to your warm embrace soon."
Weibo users were outraged, and called for the parents of the baby boy to be punished.
"The parents who did this have hearts even filthier than that sewage pipe," wrote one user.
"This should be sentenced to death, they are killing their own baby," another posted. "This is not the only abandoned baby case I saw in the past 10 days, one threw in dumpster and died; the other one was flushed into toilet, those are not actions human beings should do (sic)."
There are frequent reports in Chinese media of babies being abandoned, often shortly after birth, a problem attributed variously to young mothers unaware they were pregnant, the birth of an unwanted girl in a society which puts greater value on boys, or China's strict family planning rules.
