A group of bakers trapped in their El Bolillo Bakery by Harvey's flood waters for two days over the weekend used that time to bake as much bread as they could for those impacted by the flooding.
The bakery was not damaged by flooding, but roads outside were impassable, the Houston Chronicle reported.
“For most of the time, they decided not to waste time and made as much pan dulce as they could. How they helped us today is the only reason we were able to open today,” Manager Brian Alvarado told the Chronicle.
The bakers used more than 4,200 pounds of flour to make over a thousand loaves of bread and were able to leave the bakery early Monday, the Chronicle reported. The bread was distributed to flood victims all over Houston with the help of first responders.
Head baker Jorge Agundis told Public Radio International he was worried about his family — a wife and three young children — while he was stuck inside the bakery, but the baking helped keep his mind off their situation and whether the trailer park where they lived was flooding.
When he left the bakery, he found out the water had stopped just six inches away from his home.
Meagan Michaelis, El Bolillo Bakery's social media head, told WGN, “We’re just one store doing what we know how, that’s bake and provide people with the bare basics: bread. The power of positivity is viral. We hope more people do their part and give, inspired by the bakers, that’s all.”
