A bald eagle rescue resulted in a bald eagle selfie for Canadian brothers Michael and Neil Fletcher after they found the majestic bird stuck in a trap during a recent hunting trip.
Michael Fletcher posted video of the rescue to his Facebook page where it has garnered more than 1 million views. And a selfie they took with the bird earned the
title of "epic" from ABC News.
"Neil just said, 'Hey, let's take a selfie with it' and I did. [The eagle] didn't move," Michael Fletcher told ABC. "We knew it would get some ‘likes,’" but they were not expecting it to go so far.
"I know it’s a cool picture," he said.
The brothers told The Sudbury Star that they were driving along, looking for grouse to hunt, when Neil Fletcher saw something. They got out and found a bald eagle with one claw caught in a trap like those used by fur harvesters.
"It was attached to a stake and the eagle was trying to fly up, but it only had a foot of slack in the chain," Michael Fletcher told the Star. They considered calling officials to help with the rescue, but thought they should get the bird out quickly.
Michael Fletcher put his hoodie over the bald eagle's head and released it from the trap, the newspaper reported.
"Me and my brother just kind of held onto it, and it calmed right down," he said.
The bird even stayed calm after they took the hoodie off and shot the now-famous selfie.
"It didn't really fuss or give any sign of aggression," Michael Fletcher told the Star. "I don't know if it knew we were helping him, or what."
