A "Batgirl" movie is reportedly coming soon from "Avengers" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" director Joss Whedon.
The "Batgirl" project only originated last month, Variety reported, with Whedon planning to write, direct, and produce the film. No other producers or staff are attached to the project yet.
"Batgirl" would be be Whedon's first DC Comics film ("Avengers" is from Marvel) and the second DC movie to have a female lead after June’s "Wonder Woman" opens. Other DC Extended Universe Films include 2013’s "Man of Steel," last year's "Batman v Superman," "Suicide Squad," and the upcoming "Justice League" and "Aquaman."
Also in development are a "Suicide Squad" sequel and spinoff, a new Batman movie with Ben Affleck, a "Shazam" film, and movies based on the Flash and Cyborg.
Whedon previously worked on "Angel," "Firefly," "Dollhouse," and "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D."
Batgirl debuted in the comics in 1967 as Barbara Gordon, the daughter of Gotham Police Commissioner Games Gordon. Her current popularity as a character probably comes from the 2014 comics reboot "Batgirl of Burnside" by Brenden Fletcher, Cameron Stewart, and Babs Tarr.
Twitter was skeptical of Whedon's abilities to spearhead a Batgirl flick, while others gave him credit.
