The television version of Batwoman will be portrayed as lesbian and played by actress Ruby Rose, The CW announced this week, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Rose, who is lesbian, will make her debut as the character during the annual crossover episode of The CW's DC Comic-related shows in December, often called the "Arrow-verse," the celebrity publication said.
The shows connected with the character crossover series on The CW include "The Flash," "Arrow," "Legends of Tomorrow" and "Supergirl," according to Variety.
Variety described the Batwoman character as an "out lesbian and highly trained street fighter" with a "passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind."
Rose's announcement came after The CW said it wanted to cast an openly gay actress in the role, The Hollywood Reporter said. Rose will appear in the action thriller movie "The Meg," which will be released in theaters on Friday.
The Australian actress, 32, whose full name is Ruby Rose Langenheim, also has appeared in "Pitch Perfect 3," "John Wick: Chapter 2," and the Netflix hit "Orange Is the New Black."
Variety reported last month that The CW was in the works for developing a series based on Batwoman, whose alias is Kate Kane, which could appear as soon as 2019 if it is picked up.
The Hollywood Reporter reported last month that transgender activist and actress Nicole Maines would play superhero Dreamer, or Nia Nal, in episodes of "Supergirl."
DC Comics first introduced Batwoman in 1956 at Kathy Kane and revised the character in 2006 as the openly lesbian Kate Kane, The HuffPost reported.
The announcement of the Batwoman casting was met with mixed reaction on social media.
