As Donald Trump was sworn in during the inauguration Friday, British television channel BBC seems to have used the wrong subtitles to caption the event.
Instead of captioning the oath of office or the prayers being said afterward, the BBC apparently used subtitles from a different television show in an apparent mistake, the Daily Mail reported. The subtitles appeared to be from a kids’ television drama called “The Dumping Ground.”
Subtitles like “Just shut it, yeah?” “Oh whatever” and “Mum will get into trouble” were showing on the screen with Trump’s and Obama’s faces, among others, according to the Daily Mail.
The BBC is investigating the incident, whether it was a Twitter fabrication, and whether or not it could have been intentional.
Many viewers seemed to enjoy the joke. Social media was abuzz with comments about the humor of seeing the wrong subtitles, beginning with user @Kaytality who uploaded footage with the comment, “BBC News have the wrong subtitles on and it’s pretty glorious.” That tweet from Kayleigh Smirk, a Southampton retail assistant, went viral almost immediately, according to BuzzFeed.
Smirk said she was watching the inauguration ceremony on mute when she noticed the wrong subtitles. “The reaction has been insane, my notifications have pretty much melted at this point,” she told BuzzFeed. “But I’m really glad it seems to have cheered people up regardless!”
Twitter comments showed a variety of reactions.
