Bear Stuck in Cookie Jar: Cub Wanted Last Animal Crackers (Photo)

A 6-month-old bear cub got its head stuck in a plastic cookie jar and then had to be rescued from a tree late last week.

The 28-pound black bear cub was apparently rummaging through trash in the New Jersey town of Ringwood on Friday night near the New York border when he got his head stuck in the cookie jar.

The cub became spooked when approached and went up a tree, getting wedged about 40 feet up.

The animal had apparently pulled the animal cracker container over his head to get the last crumbs and had to be tranquilized by an Environmental Protection Department biologist. The plastic container was then cut off by Ringwood firefighters. The cub is reportedly recovering with a local rehabilitator.

Larry Ragonese, a spokesman for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, said the problems of bears getting into similar situations goes back to homeowners not taking care of their trash. He advised homeowners living near bears’ habitats to use bear-proof trash cans and "then you won't have Winnie the Pooh," he told NorthJersey.com.
