Bill Belichick's seismic worries jolted Mexicans and drew widespread criticism after the New England Patriots coach quipped that he was thankful there was no earthquake while the team was in Mexico City.
The Patriots defeated the Oakland Raiders 33-8 in Mexico City on Sunday but this victory was overshadowed by the coach's remarks, Sports Illustrated noted.
Belichick was on WEEI's "Dale and Keith with Holley" radio show on Monday afternoon when he passed the comment.
"Players did a great job dealing with all the challenges that we had to deal with," Belichick said. "I think we're fortunate there was no volcano eruptions, earthquakes or anything else while we were down there. I mean you have two NFL franchises in an area that I don't know how stable the geological plates that were below us [were], but nothing happened so that was good."
Mexico City is still reeling in the aftermath of the magnitude 7.1 quake that shook its core in September, resulting in hundreds of deaths and widespread destruction.
In wake of the devastation, Belichick's comment caused a furor on social media.
"Outrageous ignorance of a 'genius' in the NFL," ESPN Mexico's Poncho Vera posted on Twitter.
Others turned the logic around, citing U.S. tragedies.
"I think I'm also lucky I went to Las Vegas and I did not get shot," a Twitter user posted.
