Bethany Hamilton, the pro surfer who lost her left arm to a shark attack in 2003, announced this week that she and husband Adam Dirks are expecting a son in June.
The pair, who recently came in second on “The Amazing Race," made the "Baby on Board" announcement in a cute YouTube video.
Hamilton said her current project, “Surfs Like a Girl,” will be put on hold while she is pregnant and until she’s recovered from birth. The two-part undertaking,
which raises funds on Kickstarter, includes a full-length feature film about Hamilton and her story, as well as a documentary that tracks her journey from “pre-shark attack days to her pro-surfing life today."
Hamilton didn’t shy away from concerns about life as a one-armed mother, admitting there will be some challenges.
“Motherhood with one arm. I have been kind of thinking about it, but I often forget that I have one arm. But when I think about it — changing the diaper and me and this squirming baby, could be really challenging,” the 25-year-old said. “I think how I live life now, I just adjust and adapt to different things, especially things that are a lot easier with two arms.”
“I think there are going to be things that are very challenging with one arm, but I’ll just have to find my own way to take care of the baby,” she continued. “Of course, I’ll have Adam to help. I’ll have to adjust to little things and figure it out and be creative.”
Dirks shared that he’s really “stoked” to be a dad.
"I'm going to be there to support my wife and support my family," he said. "I'll be changing diapers on the beach while Bethany's out there surfing some gnarly waves. I'm all for that.”
