Before he became vice president, Joe Biden was known for taking the train between his home state of Delaware and Washington, D.C. On Friday after Donald Trump's inauguration, Biden boarded the train home once more.
“Back on Amtrak,” Biden said as he boarded the train Friday, Time reported.
Biden famously commuted 259 miles roundtrip for more than 200 days a year while he was a senator from Delaware.
The former VP was welcomed home with a ceremony in Wilmington, Delaware, the state for which he served as senator before becoming Barack Obama’s vice president in 2009.
Biden told CNN he estimates he has ridden more than 2 million miles on Amtrak trains. As he rode, he said he looked out the window and tried to imagine what people were doing at their kitchen tables. “What are people thinking about? What are their real worries?” Biden said.
The Bidens plan to purchase a home in Washington, D.C., according to The New York Times. They want to be near to Obamas, both to work with them and because they have become close friends. Jill Biden also wants to continue teaching in Northern Virginia, and some of their grandchildren live there as well.
As they did during his tenure as vice president, Biden and his wife Jill will spend many weekends in Delaware, where their other grandchildren live, the Times reported.
Unlike many politicians, Biden has shown little interest in speaking or consulting arrangements that could make him a millionaire.
Biden is still deciding how to divide his time after the White House between several policy and charitable interests, the Times reported.
