The HBO limited series “Big Little Lies” has been renewed for a second season with most of the cast expected to return including stars Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, who also executive produced the series.
HBO announced the dark comedy’s return on Friday; the second season will have seven episodes, according to The New York Times. The show centers around several feuding families in Monterey, California, the parents of which are all suspects in a crime there.
David E. Kelley will return as the show’s writer and has already written scripts for the new season’s episodes, The New York Times reported. The show will have a new director, however. British director Andrea Arnold (“Transparent”) will take over from Jean-Marc Vallee.
The show was originally based on a book by Australian writer Liane Moriarty. There is no timeline for when the new season will air. HBO reported that it is in negotiations for returning cast members.
Witherspoon said in a statement that the return of the series “gives us the opportunity to delve deeper into the lives of these intriguing and intricate Monterey families and bring more of their stories back to the audience who embraced and championed them.
The series had good ratings and won several awards in the limited series category at the Emmy Awards in September, including best limited series, best actress (Kidman), best supporting actor (Laura Dern and Alexander Skarsgard) and best director (Vallee), The New York Times reported.
Although the first season ended on a cliffhanger, according to Entertainment Weekly, it is not yet clear whether the series will pick up where season one left off or start from a different point entirely.
Many of the show's fans expressed their joy about its return on Twitter, while a smaller number said they thought it ended perfectly and nothing more was needed.
