Bill Cosby counter-sued seven of his self-described sexual assault victims for defamation in federal court on Monday, calling the women's charges against him "false" and "opportunistic."
Cosby filed the counter suit as an answer to a defamation lawsuit filed against him by the seven women, the biggest of six civil lawsuits against Cosby this year, reported
USA Today. Tamara Green, Therese Serignese, Linda Traitz, Louisa Moritz, Barbara Bowman, Joan Tarshis and Angela Leslie were named defendants.
"Mr. Cosby states plainly that he neither drugged nor sexually assaulted the defendants and that each defendant has maliciously and knowingly published multiple false statements and accusations from Fall 2014 through the current day in an effort to cause damage to Mr. Cosby's reputation and to extract financial gains," Cosby's attorney, Monique Pressley, said in a statement.
Pressley also posted a statement on Twitter.
Joseph Cammarata, an attorney representing the seven women, said Cosby's counter suit is a familiar tactic, noted
Vanity Fair. Nearly 60 women have claimed the entertainer drugged and/or sexually assaulted them over the years.
"It's a page out of a defense lawyer's playbook," said Cammarata. "It's curious to me how there can be scores of other ladies who have come out, and yet Mr. Cosby has singled out seven of them to bring a claim against. It's seems a bit retaliatory to me."
Cammarata told
E! News that the counter suit will not change his clients' determination to move forward in court.
"My clients remain resolute in their desire to have their day in court, sooner rather than later, and they each expect that their good name and reputation will be restored," he said.
