Bill de Blasio's Poll Numbers Tumble in Third Month of First Term

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio's poll numbers are weak with New Yorkers appearing to have moved past the honeymoon phase as the Democratic mayor enters his third month in City Hall.

Just 39 percent of registered New York City voters approve of Mayor Bill de Blasio's job performance, while a whopping 57 percent do not, according to a joint poll by the Wall Street Journal, NBC 4, and Marist College.

When asked if de Blasio was doing an "excellent" job as NYC mayor, just 10 percent of those polled answered yes, while 20 percent graded his job performance "poor." Most of those polled appeared to be in the middle, with 29 percent giving him an overall "good" rating while 37 percent graded his job performance "fair."

The poor ratings are in stark contrast to his predecessor, Michael Bloomberg, who at the same time in his first of three terms in office was at 50 percent approval, while just 6 percent of those polled said he was doing a "poor" job, The Wall Street Journal noted.

"He still [has] a lot to do to convince people that he's on top of the managing of the city and literally making positive changes — that's not coming through yet to people," Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, said in the WSJ.

Despite de Blasio's poor job performance ratings, New Yorkers polled generally had an overall positive view of the new mayor, with nearly 60 percent having a favorable opinion, 58 percent saying he is keeping his campaign promises, and 65 percent believing de Blasio cares about people like them.

"Mayor de Blasio has focused the first 60 days of his administration on building, running and changing the direction of the government, and with a 59 percent favorability rating, the majority of New Yorkers approve of the direction he's taking the city," a spokeswoman for the mayor told The Wall Street Journal in response to the poll.

The poll revealed a racial divide between New Yorkers, with minorities in particular supporting the mayor, who is white and married to Chirlane McCray, who is black.

In the survey, 50 percent of black and Hispanic voters polled approved of de Blasio's job performance, while just 30 percent of white voters agreed, the WSJ reported.
