The "Black Panther" box office is poised to set records this upcoming weekend with independent film trackers predicting that the newest Marvel superhero film could make $165 million over the four-day weekend, The Wrap reported.
That would top "Deadpool," which set a record for February openings with a $152 million take at the box office in 2016, the website said. While Disney is setting its sights lower, predicting a four-day total of $150 million, "Black Panther" by all predictions is expected to rank in the top 10 of February openings, The Wrap said.
"Usually, when a film like 'Black Panther' shows a lot of buzz and momentum three weeks out, it tends to hit a wall prior to its release," IMAX chief executive Greg Foster told TheWrap. "But 'Black Panther' hasn't hit the wall. It's not even in the vicinity of it. Buzz for this movie just keeps growing and growing and growing, and that leads us to believe that this movie is peaking at the right moment."
Variety reported in January that "Black Panther" had already set a record for advance ticket sales in the first 24 hours, beating out "Captain American: Civil War."
"'Black Panther' is riding an incredible wave of momentum right now," Fandango editor Erik Davis told Variety. "It's one of the biggest and most anticipated movies to ever open in the month of February, and its trailers have electrified the internet. Tickets have been going fast ever since pre-sales started on Fandango …"
Fans will be familiar with Chad Boseman's Black Panther/T'Challa character from "Captain America: Civil War." The movie is probably also benefitting from being the last picture before Marvel's big "Avengers: Infinity War," due out May 4. Boseman appeared in that superhero collaboration trailer, which has received some 135 million views on YouTube since its release in November.
"Black Panther" also features Academy Award-winners Lupita Nyong'o and Forest Whitaker, current Oscar nominee Daniel Kaluuya, Angela Bassett, Martin Freeman, Andy Serkis, and Michael B. Jordan and the film's antagonist Erik Killmonger.
