Bob Barker Pays $1M To Move 3 Elephants to Sanctuary (Video)

By    |   Wednesday, 23 October 2013 12:16 PM EDT

Avid animal activist and former "The Price Is Right" host Bob Barker paid $1 million this week to transport three zoo elephants from Canada to a sanctuary in Northern California.

Barker, 89, began lobbying two years ago to get the elephants — Iringa, Thika, and Toka — out of the Toronto Zoo in Ontario and into the Performing Animal Welfare Society's ARK 2000 compound in San Andreas, Calif. He has long advocated that zoos are inappropriate living areas for large animals.

"When you see animal mistreatment, animal cruelty, or animal exploitation in any form, it's for one reason: money, greed," Barker told the Sacramento Bee Monday as the elephants settled into their new home.

After finally securing approval from the Toronto City Council, the three pachyderms made the four-day road trip over the weekend, arriving at the 2,000-acre sanctuary Monday.

"It was more than emotional for me, for all of us," Barker said. "I had tears in my eyes and a lump in my throat. It’s hard to believe they are finally here."
