Bobby Dale Earnhardt Apologizes for Driving Under the Influence

Bobby Dale Earnhardt, the race car driver who was charged with driving under the influence Monday night in West Virginia, has apologized to his fans for his behavior, which he described as stupid.

"I wanted to let you all know I made a terrible mistake last night drinking and driving and I am thankful nothing bad happened from my stupidity and I know it could have," Earnhardt wrote in a post on his Facebook page.

"I'm sorry for letting all my fans friends and family down and I hope I can make it up to each and everyone (sic) of you and in the future be a good role model," the 25-year-old race car driver added in his post. "I will continue to move forward with my racing career and I hope I continue to have your support."

Earnhardt comes from a family of NASCAR drivers, being the son of driver Kerry Earnhardt, nephew of driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., and grandson of NASCAR Hall of Fame member Dale Earnhardt, The Associated Press notes.

Earnhardt was pulled over by a Charleston, W. Va., police officer Monday night after he was observed making a wide left turn at a high speed that caused his tires to squeal.

Cpl. R.C. Basford, the officer who pulled Earnhardt over, noted in the criminal complaint, which was filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court, that Earnhardt's eyes were glassy, and he had slurred speech. Additionally, the cop said it smelled like alcohol inside his car.

Earnhardt's blood alcohol level was .193, more than twice the state's legal limit, which is .08.

Earnhardt later admitted to Basford that he had two shots of liquor at a local bar.

The 25-year-old was released the following morning following an arraignment, spending the night in the South Central Regional Jail.

Earnhardt faces six months in jail and a maximum $500 fine if convicted.

The driver recently relocated from Rockingham, N.C., to Charleston, where the AP reported that he plans to train, with the hope of one day following in his family's footsteps and competing in NASCAR races.
