Boston Marathon Backpacks Hoax: 'Mentally Ill' Suspect Arrested

By    |   Wednesday, 16 April 2014 11:47 AM EDT

A 25-year-old man was arrested Tuesday at the site of last year's Boston Marathon for allegedly dropping a backpack containing a rice cooker full of confetti near the finish line. A second bag was also discovered at the scene.

Witnesses told police they saw Kayvon Edson carrying one of the backpacks while walking barefoot in the street, shrouded in black, and screaming "Boston strong!" before dropping it at the finish line, CBS Boston reported. When questioned, Edson reportedly told police there was a rice cooker in the bag.

The incident was reminiscent of what happened at the site exactly a year prior when brothers Tamerlan and Dzhokhar Tsarnaev allegedly detonated two pressure-cooker bombs at the marathon, killing three and injuring more than 260 people.

Police evacuated the area around Boylston Street in order to investigate the backpack and another bag that was left unattended near the finish line.

Officials later detonated the two bags "for precautionary reasons," according to the Boston Globe.

Police Superintendent Randall Halstead declined to say who might have owned the second backpack or what was inside, USA Today reported.

Edson, who reportedly has a history of mental illness, was arrested for threatening battery, possession of a hoax explosive device, threats to commit a crime, disturbing the peace, disturbing a public assembly, and disorderly conduct, according to the Boston Police Department website.

Earlier in the day, some 2,500 people gathered at the Hynes Convention Center for an invitation-only event marking the one-year anniversary of the Boston Marathon twin bombings.
