A North Carolina couple, victims of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, are going their separate ways after marrying in 2014.
Rebekah Gregory, 27, and Pete DiMartino, 30, both underwent multiple surgeries after they were injured in the bombing. Gregory struggled with injuries to her left leg and DiMartino underwent multiple surgeries to repair damage to his Achilles tendon.
Despite their struggles, the two, who had been dating for a year at the time of the bombing, persevered and were married in April 2014.
At the time, Gregory told NBC News, “We really appreciate each other so much more. I’ve fallen deeper in love with Pete every single day.”
But Gregory finally lost her battle to keep her leg, and it was amputated in November. She told People magazine, “After the decision was made to amputate my leg in November, I found myself having to make an even more painful choice — to separate from my husband, Pete. Over the last several months I've come to realize that going through such a horrific event together put a fast-forward on our relationship that we each handled differently.”
Gregory told People that she still loves her husband, and asked that their privacy be respected as they work out their next steps.
“While my heart is beyond broken, I have a certain peace knowing from day one, I truly gave it my all, and have been fully invested in keeping this marriage, and my commitment before God,” Gregory told the entertainment magazine.
Gregory is blogging about her experience losing her leg and the training she is doing to run this year’s Boston Marathon on her Facebook page. She wrote Thursday, “Throughout my life I have learned just because one bad thing happens ... doesn't mean another won't follow. But that's life. It's messy, it's complicated and sometimes it HURTS so bad. But through each heartache and obstacle, there is a chance for us to learn more about ourselves and ultimately become stronger as a result.”
