A boy survived a Niagara Falls tumble in a photo op, landing nearly 200 feet in a gorge below, Toronto's CP24 television reported.

The 10-year-old boy fell last Sunday afternoon, a representative from Orange Air Ambulance told the television station. The incident happened at Niagara River Parkway within viewing distance from the iconic falls on the Canadian side, noted CP24.

Authorities told the BBC News that the boy apparently lost his balance and fell backwards into the gorge while his mother was attempted to take a photo of him. The boy was transported by helicopter to McMaster Children's Hospital in Hamilton, Ontario, the BBC reported.

The Niagara Gazette reported that members of the Niagara Falls Fire Department, Niagara Parks Police High Angle River Team, and Niagara Emergency Medical Service located the boy and stabilized his injuries before transporting him to McMaster Children's.

The newspaper stated that the boy was visiting from outside the country but did not give further details. The boy, who hit his head in the fall, was originally listed in critical condition but was later upgraded to stable, the BBC News stated.

The BBC News wrote that roughly dozen people have gone over the falls since 1901, usually intentionally. Michigan native Kirk Jones earlier this year after going over the falls in an inflatable ball after surviving a suicide attempt there in 2003, wrote BBC News and Niagara Gazette.

The Gazette said it appeared that Jones attempted to go into the falls with a pet boa constrictor on April 19 when he went missing. An empty inflatable was found April 20 and Jones body was discovered June 2 by a sailing vessel at the mouth of Lake Ontario and the Niagara River, the Gazette reported.

A Japanese exchange student died in 2011 when she slipped and fell into the falls after climbing a pillar to get a better view, the BBC News stated.
