A Brad Pitt FBI "evaluation" is underway, weighing whether or not to pursue an investigation over alleged child abuse, and now the actor has reportedly lawyered up, according to Fox News.
Pitt has reportedly hired attorney Lance Spiegel to join his legal team, which already includes Alan Hergot. Fox News reported the development, but was unable to confirm with a Pitt representative.
The FBI, though, has confirmed its agency is mulling a possible probe.
“The FBI is continuing to gather facts and will evaluate whether an investigation at the federal level will be pursued,” the FBI told Fox News in a statement.
The FBI would handle any potential investigation, not the LAPD, since the alleged incident is said to have occurred while the family was flying between France and Los Angeles, Fox News stated in a Thursday report.
"There was an incident that occurred on [a] plane and the FBI is currently handling it. We're not handling any investigation into this incident . . . [with] Brad Pitt," an LAPD spokesperson told the news outlet.
Earlier in the day, the Los Angeles Police Department stamped out rumors it was involved in a probe of alleged verbal and physical abuse by Pitt on one of his and Angelina Jolie's six children.
“We understand how rumors get spun up and hopefully we can put a few of them to rest. We have no investigation involving Mr. Pitt,” the LAPD told The Hollywood Reporter.
The Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services would not comment either way.
The department has "no statement — the law does not allow us to confirm the subjects of our investigations,” a spokesperson told Vanity Fair. “[We] cannot confirm or deny an investigation."
The alleged incident is ultimately what triggered the divorce, reports claimed.
Speculation also ran wild online this week that Pitt was engaged in an affair with Marion Cotillard, who was cast with him in the upcoming film “World War II.” But she pulled the plug on that on Wednesday, said USA Today.
Cotillard took to Instagram to distance herself from those rumors, saying she wanted no part in the current drama surrounding the divorce. In the lengthy post, the actress said: “This is going to be my first and only reaction to the whirlwind news that broke 24 hours ago and that I was swept into.”
“Firstly, many years ago, I met the man of my life, father of our son and of the baby we are expecting. He is my love, my best friend, the only one that I need.”
She ended by saying, “Finally, I do very much wish that Angelina and Brad, both whom I deeply respect, will find peace in this very tumultuous moment.”
USA Today confirmed the authenticity of the post, making it clear that Cotillard was indeed the author.
