The "Breakfast at Tiffany's" townhouse in New York City, one of the signature landmarks of the iconic 1961 movie, is now on the market for $8 million.
"Breakfast at Tiffany's," which starred Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard, won two Academy Awards — one for Best Song for "Moon River" and also for Best Musical Score, while Hepburn was nominated for Best Actress and George Axelrod for Best Screenplay from Another Medium.
Filmmakers only used the exterior and front steps of the Upper East Side townhouse, at 169 E. 71st St., for the movie,
including its kiss in the rain, according to the New York Daily News. All of the interior shots of Hepburn's Holly Golightly character's home were shot on a sound stage in Los Angeles.
The townhouse used to be owned by Peter E. Bacanovic, who was Martha Stewart's stockbroker and served prison time as part of her insider-trading scandal, reported the Daily News. The property's current owner purchased the home in 2012 for $5.97 million.
Catherine Sherman, of Zillow.com said the $8 million price tag is a 20-percent mark-down from the original asking price, but added that Asher Alcobi, of Peter Ashe Real Estate, believes the home is still generating plenty of interest.
"The signature olive green doors are still the same," Alcobi told Zillow.com, pointing out its continued historical value. "The house is on the tourist tour of the Upper East Side."
The 3,800-square-foot brownstone includes four bedrooms, five bathrooms, a sweeping staircase, and an enclosed greenhouse, according to Zillow.com. It's split into an upper and lower duplex with two-bedroom suites that have their own renovated baths.
The townhouse also has a sunny living room with a wood-burning fireplace, a renovated kitchen, and laundry room. The downstairs has a garden apartment with a separate entrance with a front library, powder room, and a large bedroom and full bath.
Owners of the townhouse in the 1980s renovated the brownstone and it was remodeled once again in the 1990s.
