'Breakfast Club' Script Found at School Where Movie Was Filmed

An early "Breakfast Club" script was found recently in the Illinois high school where the iconic movie was filmed.

"One day a few weeks ago, one of the assistants was going through a filing cabinet and found a file that had a manuscript from 'The Breakfast Club' dated Sept. 21, 1983," Ken Wallace, superintendent of Maine Township High School District 207 in suburban Chicago, told The Chicago Tribune.

"It's a first draft of the screenplay by John Hughes," he added.

The Park Ridge school, Maine South High, is not far from where Hughes grew up, in nearby Northbrook on Chicago’s North Shore. The school was shuttered in 1981, but brought back to life by the once-in-a-lifetime performances of Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy.

Wallace said that the script was marked by "what appears to be pizza grease," and was given a signature of approval by then-superintendent John Murphy in January of 1984.

"Reviewed and approved by Dr. Murphy," was scrawled in blue pen across the grease stained pages.

Along with the script were other documents related to the film, including a contract with Universal Studios that appears to have negotiated a fee of $48,000 to rent the school out for filming. There was also a thank you letter penned to the studio.

"We close with nothing but the fondest thoughts and memories of Universal Studios and 'The Breakfast Club,'" wrote Donald Stillwaugh, former coordinator of purchasing and facilities for District 207. "We trust the film will be a huge success."
