Brian Williams could get a new role at NBC, as rumors fly that the network will likely boot the veteran newsman as "Nightly News" anchor but keep him around in a new capacity.
But weeks of tough negotiations between NBC and Williams have not yet lead to an agreement over the anchor's future,
sources with direct information of the situation told CNN Money.
Williams is still serving a six-month suspension after his credibility took a hit in February when it was revealed he had embellished multiple stories about his reporting.
According to CNN Money, there are many options on the table. Williams' five-year contract, signed at the end of last year and worth a reported $10 million a year, could be terminated and he could settle with NBC.
He could return to his "Nightly News" role and slowly work to regain the trust of the viewers.
Or he could be incorporated into a new position entirely. Andy Lack, chairman of NBC News, is reportedly an advocate of that scenario, a source told CNN Money.
"Andy's contorting to figure out a way to keep Brian," the source said.
Lack reportedly asked attendees at a recent meeting to “think creatively” about a possible new position for Williams.
To some individuals in the television news industry, the event is reminiscent of the Ann Curry mess in 2012, in which she was ultimately demoted from "Today" co-host to "anchor at large" and marginalized.
The 56-year-old Williams was the most-watched nightly news anchor until last February when his
exaggerations were uncovered, according to the New York Post.
After news broke on Twitter of a possible new role for Williams, many voiced both their disapproval of his past actions and forgiveness.
