Brittney Griner, Phoenix Mercury center and first pick in the 2013 WNBA draft, was arrested on domestic violence charges Wednesday along with fiancée and fellow WNBA player Glory Johnson.
Yahoo Sports reported that both women were charged with assault and disorderly conduct by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office after deputies were called to their suburban Phoenix home when a fight turned physical.
Griner and Johnson, who plays for Tulsa Shock, were expected to wed next month after announcing their engagement over the summer.
''Of course our first concern is for Glory's well-being and health,'' said Shock president Steve Swetoha.
"The Mercury organization is aware of an alleged incident involving Brittney Griner. We are in the process of gathering additional information, and will have no further comment at this time," said Jim Pitman, executive vice president and general manager of the Phoenix Mercury.
Both women were reported to have only minor injuries following the incident, and did not require medical attention.
According to ABC affiliate Arizona 15, both women were released at 4 a.m. on Thursday from the 4th Avenue Jail in downtown Phoenix.
The couple's high-profile relationship has garnered a sizable following on social media and, just a day before the violent incident, Griner was celebrating their engagement on Instagram.
