Bruce Jenner came out as a transgender, church-going Republican in an interview with Diane Sawyer on Friday, surprising many people in both parties.
"I've always been on the more conservative side," Jenner said,
according to CNN.
"Are you a Republican?" Sawyer asked with surprise.
"Yeah. Is that a bad thing?" said Jenner with a smile. "I believe in the Constitution."
Sawyer quickly turned diplomatic, and asked Jenner if he would ever work with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and House Speaker John Boehner on advocating for transgender people in the political sphere.
"I would do that, in a heartbeat," Jenner answered. "Yeah, why not? And I think they'd be very receptive to it."
According to a July Gallup poll, Jenner is among 21 percent of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Americans who are Republican or lean Republican. An estimated 63 percent are or lean Democratic.
LGBT group Log Cabin Republicans were among the first to congratulate Jenner as an out transgender conservative just minutes after the interview.
"As the nation's only organization representing LGBT conservatives and straight allies, Log Cabin Republicans congratulates Bruce Jenner in the tremendous courage he demonstrated tonight, being true to himself both in terms of his personal identity as well as his political identity," National Executive Director Gregory T. Angelo said in a statement. "There is a home for you in Log Cabin Republicans — as there is for all lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, and transgender conservatives and straight allies."
Many liberals were excised by the revelation, and voiced displeasure with Jenner's party affiliation.
Gathered below are a few opinions voiced on Twitter both in favor and against Jenner's party affiliation.
